A perennial plant is a plant that lives for more than two years. In warmer and more clement climates, perennials grow continuously. In seasonal climates, their growth is limited to the growing season. Perennial plants usually grow stronger than annual plants, especially under poor conditions. This is due to the development of larger root systems which can access water and soil nutrients deeper in the soil and to earlier emergence in the spring.

For the home owner, they eliminate the need to plant "color" from scratch each spring. A nice selection of perennials provides a good base of plants to start with along with adding annuals for additional color and variety.
